Five garage door openers I’d spend my own money on, from the one that just gets the job done to the one I’d put on my own garage. My top pick isn’t the most expensive one on the list, and it carries a lifetime warranty on the motor and the belt.
I cover chain drive vs belt drive, what HPc horsepower ratings really mean, why battery backup matters, why every pick is a Chamberlain or a Genie, and the $199 opener at Home Depot I’d walk right past. At the end I talk about hangar doors and hydraulic and bi-fold doors from Schweiss and PowerLift for anybody building a hangar, a big shop, or a garage with an oversized opening.

The batteries in garage door openers fail often in two years or less. They cost nearly $100. Many openers will not work at all with a failed battery. Avoid battery backup.
The genie today is not the genie of yesterday..I have two 25 year old genie screw drive..still working good installed a new genie with battery backup
And it was a piece of cheap crap
The best day ever was when my Genie screw drive failed. Ridiculously noisy, constantly needing grease. Chains or belts, yes; screw drives, no way. I have an elderly friend with three of them. She is fortunate to have bad hearing.
I have a metal building, all metal frame as well, with (2) 12×12 insulated sectional roll up doors. I want to use wall mount openers for ceiling clearance. What do you recommend?
Am I the only one who thinks the battery backup feature was designed to get you IN the house when power is lost, not OUT of the house? If the garage door opener is your way in (no house key) this is a more likely scenario. Its a stupid option and one I will avoid, rechargeable batteries die often, especially if never used, and will need replaced constantly. Not interested in replacing a never used battery in my garage opener for the rare chance its my only way in or out during a power outage. Genie was great back in the day, they now make garbage. Been fighting mine for 12 years and it will soon be replaced by a Chamberlain. You ask “why pay more for a Chamberlain with a lesser warranty”? Because warranties are typically worthless as the paper they are written on, and the Chamberlain is a higher quality product. That is why.
